What if the best beta-reader was another writer?

Authors need beta readers. Professional beta reading is very expensive—around 3 cents a word—which costs roughly $2,400 for an average-length manuscript. Relying on close friends and family rarely yields the type of critique a manuscript requires. Subhead was created to facilitate secure manuscript swapping among fellow authors.

The platform operates as a private, invitation-only network that doubles as a community of writers. Manuscripts are never uploaded to a server; instead, Subhead functions as a commitment tracker and communication hub. All exchanges of manuscripts and excerpts are handled directly between authors using links to their preferred cloud storage. Subhead stores these links, but they are encrypted.

Here is a rundown of what Subhead does:

• The system records the terms of your swap, tracking who is reading your work, the scope of the critique, and the agreed-upon deadlines. While this provides a structured framework, authors are free to set their own terms.
• It simplifies the process of staying in touch and organizing feedback. Integrations with Google Drive and Dropbox make file-sharing straightforward.
• Subhead is free to use. By relying on a strict invite-only model, our goal is to grow a genuinely supportive, high-quality community of peers.
• There are separate areas to share feedback on full manuscripts, chapters, excerpts, and submission packages (query letters, synopses, and pitches).
• Members can create private, invite-only writing groups to share feedback. Uninvited users cannot see comments or access any material.
• Subhead offers other goodies, because why not: a forum, a book club, and a query and agent tracker.
• Everyone who joins the community agrees never to use AI or share another writer's content with chatbots like Claude or ChatGPT (an issue I have unfortunately encountered with paid beta readers on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork).
• Workshop groups often form and disband within a matter of weeks, making it difficult to stay in touch with writers you enjoyed working with. Subhead provides a structured, secure way to continue collaborating with authors you have grown to trust.
